The city was originally called Abdju, which meaning "the hill of the symbol or reliquary" The name Abydos comes from the Greeks, who named the city after the port city of the same name located on the Hellespont, The modern Arabic name is El-Araba El Madfuna.

 

It is believed that Abydos served as a cult center ever since the city was first founded, and today it is clear that by the end of the Old Kingdom period, Abydos was primarily a center for the Osiris and Isis cult, Paintings and scrolls found in tombs throughout Egypt reveal that making the pilgrimage to Abydos was seen as being a noble thing to do and an accomplishment to be incredibly proud of, there is still a great deal to see at the present site, you can visit the present site including Temple of Seti I which became the most popular and most fascinating attraction.
